soft gamma repeater

A class of rare gamma-ray sources that are observed to emit infrequent bursts of radiation. For example, one was seen to have three bursts in 1979 and a further three in 1992. Each burst lasts a maximum of a few seconds. They are thought to be young, rapidly spinning neutron stars. Two are known to be located within supernova remnants.
